The City Is Broken

THE CITY IS BROKEN was a site specific instillation for the 2013 ART IN THE DARK annual festival held in Myers Park, Ponsonby, Auckland, New Zealand.

My initial concept for a 6-foot-long by 6-foot-deep hole to be dug into Western Park with the base lined with fluorescent light tubes was not allowed by the Auckland City Council.

Subsequently I discovered that Claes Oldenburg had a similar sized hole (6-foot-long by 3-foot-deep) dug by undertakers in Central Park behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1967 – titled ‘Placid Civic Monument’.

‘The City Is Broken’ will be a scaled back performative version of my initial idea.

One or several holes will be excavated in response to the contingencies of the site. At night these will emit a glow from a mysterious subterranean light source.

The Art In The Dark site has a shorter statement…

‘Site-specific excavated holes in Western Park will emit a glow from a mysterious subterranean light source.’
